How to Use Google Drive

When Google Drive first launched, it served as a place to store your files in the cloud so that they could be accessed anywhere. As Drive has evolved, it has assimilated the roles of Google Docs and now serves as the hub for all Google document creation and office tools. You can even install apps into Drive to expand its functionality even further. Get the most out of Google Drive by following this guide.

Part 1 of 4: Accessing Google Drive

    Sign into the Google Drive website with your Google account. If you don’t have a Google account, you can create one for free. Google Drive will allow you to store your files in the cloud, as well as create documents and forms through the Google Drive web interface.

    Add files to your drive. There are two ways to add files to your drive. You can create Google Drive documents, or you can upload files from your computer. To create a new file, click the CREATE button. To upload a file, click the “Up Arrow” button next to the CREATE button.

    Change the way your files are displayed. You can choose to display files by large icons (Grid) or as a list (List). The List mode will show you at a glance the owner of the document and when it was last modified. The Grid mode will show each file as a preview of its first page. You can change the mode by clicking the buttons next to the gear icon in the upper right corner of the page.

Use Google Drive Step 4 Version 2.jpgUse the navigation bar on the left side to browse your files. “My Drive” is where all of your uploaded files and folders are stored. “Shared with Me” are documents and files that have been shared with you by other Drive users. “Starred” files are files that you have marked as important, and “Recent” files are the ones you have most recently edited.
    • You can drag and drop files and folders around your Drive to organize them as you see fit.

    • Click the check box to select multiple files and folders. You can then perform actions for these selected files by clicking the buttons at the top of the page. If you are using the large icon view, the check box appears when you hover your mouse over the document. There are more options in the “More” menu.

    • Click the Folder icon with a “+” sign to create a new folder in your Drive. You can create folders inside of other folders to organize your files.

    Search for files. You can search through your Google Drive documents and folders using the search bar at the top of your page. Google Drive will search through titles, content, and owners. If a file is found with the exact term in the title, it will appear under the search bar as you type so that you can quickly select it.

    Download the app for your mobile device. You can download the Google Drive app for your Android or iOS device which allows you to access your files from your phone or tablet. The app can be downloaded for free from your app store. The app may not have all of the same editing features as the browser version.

Part 2 of 4: Creating and Editing Documents

    Click the CREATE button. A menu will appear that allows you to choose what type of document you want to create. You have several options by default, and more can be added by clicking the “Connect more app” link at the bottom of the menu:
    • Folder – This creates a folder in your My Drive for file organization.
    • Document – This creates a blank word processor document. You can adjust formatting and page setup using the tools and menus at the top of the document. You can export documents into Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, PDF, and other formats.
    • Presentation – This opens the Google Drive equivalent of Microsoft PowerPoint. Files can be exported as Microsoft PowerPoint, PDF, JPG, and other formats.
    • Spreadsheet – This creates a blank spreadsheet. Spreadsheets can be exported as Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice, PDF, CSV, and other formats.
    • Form – This allows you to create forms that can be filled out online. Forms can be exported to CSV files.

    Create a new file. Once you’ve selected your document type, you will be taken to your blank document. If you chose Presentation or Form, you will be greeted by a wizard that will help you configure the feel of your document.

    Name the file. At the top of the page, click the italic gray text that says “Untitled <file type>”. When you click it, the “Rename document” window will appear, allowing you to change the name of your file.

    Edit your document. Begin writing your document as you would in its commercially-equivalent. You will most likely find that Google Drive has most of the basic features, but advanced features you may be used to are not available.
    • Your document saves automatically as you work on it.

    Export and convert the file. If you want to make your file compatible with similar programs, click File and place your cursor over “Download As”. A menu will appear with the available formats. Choose the format that best suits your needs. You will be asked to name the file and select a download location. When the file is downloaded, it will be in the format you chose.

    Share your document. Click File and select Share, or click the blue Share button in the upper right corner to open the Sharing settings. You can specify who can see the file as well as who can edit it.
    • Give the link at the top to the people you are sharing the file with. You can use the buttons below to quickly share via Gmail, Google+, Facebook, or Twitter.
    • Change who has access to the document by clicking the “Change…” link. By default, the document is private and you must invite people for them to have access. You can change this to allow everyone who has the link, or to open and searchable by the entire internet.
    • Invite people to edit your document by entering their contact information into the “Invite people” field. Invited users must sign in to Google Drive in order to access the document.
    • Change invited people’s access by clicking the blue link next to each to their names. You can allow them to edit the document or just be able to view it.

    Publish the document. To publish your document, spreadsheet, or presentation, click File and select “Publish to the web”. Publishing a Google Drive document creates a copy of that document that anyone can see. The copy becomes a separate webpage that is not linked to your original document. This allows you to share the document with anyone you want without changing your sharing settings.[1]
    • A published document cannot be edited. You can still edit the original file that remains in Google Drive.

    Print the document. If you have a printer installed or have access to a Google Cloud printer, you can print your documents. Click on the File menu and select Print from the bottom of the list.
    • Choose your print settings. You can specify which pages to print, as well as the layout of the page. Click Print to move to the next screen.
    • The print preview will open, and you can select your printer by clicking the Change button. This is useful if you are trying to access your Google Cloud printer at home while out at work or school.

    Revert to an older version of a document. If you’ve made a bunch of changes to a document and realize you need to revert back to your old version, you can use the Revision History tool to browse through old copies. Open the document and click the File menu. Select “See revision history” and a frame with a list of your revisions will open on the right side of the page.[2]
    • You can click on each revision on the list to see the document I your main window.
    • When you’ve found the revision you want to keep, click the blue “Restore this revision link” underneath its entry on the list.

Part 3 of 4: Uploading and Downloading Files

    Download the Google Drive sync program for your computer. This is optional, but can make syncing your local files to Google Drive easier. If you want to install the program, click the link to download it on the Google Drive homepage. The link will download the correct installer for your operating system.
    • Once you download the program, install it and sign in with your Google account. A folder will be placed on the desktop that gives you quick access to all of your Google Drive files.
    • Drag any files that you want to add to your Google Drive storage into the folder and they will be automatically uploaded. When a file is successfully uploaded, it displays a green check mark on the icon.

    Set your upload settings. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the page and hover your mouse over the “Upload settings” option. You can choose to have Google Drive automatically convert uploaded files such as Word documents or Excel files into the Drive formats, and you can have Drive convert PDF files into editable text files.
    • You can select if you would like to be prompted every time you do this, or if you want it to happen automatically.
    • Unconverted files will not open in Google Drive unless you convert them. Otherwise you will need to download them to a machine that has the program required to open the file.
  3. Click the Upload button. A menu will appear allowing you to upload individual files or entire folders. Browse for the file or folder that you want to upload to Drive. Your conversion settings set earlier will take effect, and you can see the progress of the upload in the window that appears.
    • Free Google Drive accounts give you 15 GB of storage for your uploaded files. This storage is shared with your Gmail account. Any documents created in Drive do not count towards your storage limit. You can see what is taking up your storage by clicking the “Manage” link in the bottom left corner of the Drive page.

    • Files uploaded appear in your My Drive folder. You can then move them around your folder system however you’d like.

  4. Use Google Drive Step 19 Version 2.jpgDownload files from Google Drive to your computer. If you want to get a file or files onto your local computer, check the boxes for the files that you want to transfer. Click the More button at the top of the page and select Download.
    • If you are downloading Google Drive files, you will be asked what format you would like to convert them too. Otherwise, your files will begin downloading automatically.

    Delete files you don’t want. To delete files and folders, check the boxes for the items you want to delete. Click the Trash button at the top of the page. You can undo your action by clicking the Undo link, or by going to the Trash section in the left menu.
    • Remember, documents created with Google Drive do not count towards your storage limit.

Part 4 of 4: Expanding Drive’s Capabilities

    Edit photos you’ve uploaded to drive. You can use the free app Pixlr to edit any photos you’ve uploaded directly in Drive. To do so, click on the CREATE button and select “Connect more apps”. Search for Pixlr and install it for free.
    • Once Pixlr is installed, right-click on a picture in your Drive and select “Open with”. Choose Pixlr from the menu and the photo will be opened in a new tab. You can then start editing with Pixlr.

    Listen to your stored music files. If you’re using Google Drive to store your MP3s, you may have noticed that there’s no way to actually play them without downloading them first. With the Drive Music Chrome app, you can use your Google Chrome web browser to listen to your files stored in Drive. The app can be downloaded for free from the Chrome web store.

    Draw pictures with Drive. You can add the Drawing app to Drive, which will install a basic image creation program. Use this program to draw images for your other documents, or create collaborative drawings by sharing the drawing with others.

    Merge PDF files. Installing the PDF Merge app for Google drive will allow you to quickly merge any PDF files that you have stored on Drive. You can drag and drop the order to organize the final PDF file. The app will upload PDF files to a server, merge them, and then return a final merged file.

Everything You Need To Know About Google Glass

I’m sure by now, most of us have heard of the potential Google Glass has. In the video you see a few people going through everyday routines while others put it on for more extreme stuff like skydiving.
On their head, is the wearable gadget that gives you the first-person’s view of the experience, made possible by you guessed it, Google Glass.

While Google Glass is still currently a developer’s toy, who has the time to wait until it becomes an item for the masses? So we did a little digging, got our fingers dirty and found 10 things you can expect from this high-tech eyewear.
We’ll talk about its hardware, what it’s capable of doing and how it’ll do it. Be prepared for the future as you might see many people wearing the Google Glass when it’s released.

1. Tiny (But Powerful) Hardware

It’s amazing how the Project Glass team has managed to squeeze all of its features into a tiny ‘computer’ supported on a lightweight yet strong frame.

Google Glass is packed with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, speakers, a camera, microphone, touchpad and possibly a gyroscope that detects head-tilts. Then there’s the main piece, a tiny screen the size of your finger, that shows you all the information you need at your finger tips.

You can tell by the prototype that the design and engineering team have done a great job cramping everything into the current Glass design: a wearable, non-intrusive gadget that doesn’t get in the way of daily life.

2. Heed My Command!

Well, all that hardware is put to good use: Google Glass has voice input, which makes everything a lot more interesting. The built-in microphone combined with Google Now connects you directly to the search engine.
You activate Google Now by saying "Okay Glass" then send a command or question. Tilting your head up does the same thing.

You can take a photo or record a video, all by just saying the command for it – more on that, later. On the right, is a touchpad where you can swipe through, to get to menus; tapping, registers your selection.

3. Life Pauses for No One

Google Glass users can now live in the moment, and keep that memory in pictures or videos. No more foraging around for a camera, tuning the settings of your photo apps, and letting the moment go by without a single snap. Just say, "Take a Photo" and your view at the moment is captured, hands-free. Imagine the possibiltiies.

Other than photos, you can do the same with videos, which spells opportunities for extreme sports, real-life tutorials and more. Of course, picture quality coming from a device this small would not be comparable to a DSLR camera, but oftentimes, you’d rather not lose out on the moment.

4. Always On Call, Literally

With Glass being able to record videos, it can also act as a webcam with the data connection from your home or smartphone. You can use Google Hangout for a group conference, and still do what you need to do without being confined to a desk.

5. Never Get Lost Again

Since it’s built with a GPS chip, it’ll be able to help you navigate, with help from Google Maps. This will take away the need to look down at your smartphone and it will be especially handy when you are driving, when you’re walking through crowded streets or when you’re hiking through the countryside.

6. Blend In With The Locals

You can now convert the currency rate, understand the measurement system (metric or not), or translate your questions and their answers on the spot. Get the fun facts, best drinking spots, and gain access to the local secrets when you are still there, not when you are back in your apartment looking through vacation photos.

7. Live from the Field

Live information that is shown to you would come from the predictive software of Google Now. On Android’s Jelly Bean, Google Now knows when you’re leaving your home for work and can warn you of bad traffic before you get stuck in it.
You can also set your favourite sports team and it’ll give you the latest news, scores and updates from the team, whenever they play.

All those features are available on Android, but with Glass, you can skip checking your device and just get it shown to you as and when it happens, or as news feeds. Google Now cards also shows you your boarding pass, next appointment, hotel or restaurant reservations, reminders for important birthdays and events in your calendar.

8. OS Compatibility Not An Issue

Google Glass works not only with Android phones but also with the iPhone, according to this report. Apart from the GPS chip inside, Google Glass is dependent on the Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity to deliver its features. It is only fair game it if is available like any third-party accessory.

When paired up with your smart device, it can show social network notifications and let you communicate via the same channels as you would on the computer. This removes the need of looking at your smartphone constantly, giving you more time to concentrate on the task at hand.

9. Time for A Make-Over

What is high tech without a sleek and cool design? Google Glass weighed an astounding 8 pounds when it first was announced more than a year ago, but now is seeking to receive nods from the fashion industry.
Already lightweight, and soon to be available in 5 color options (Shale, Tangerine, Charcoal, Cotton and Sky), Google Glass is set to get a make-over with help from eyewear companies.

10. Still Elusive But Almost Here

Google first made Glass available to developers during the Google I/O conference. At the time, it was priced at $1,500 and word has it that it will still be within that price range when it is finally released end of this year.

Komponen-Komponen Komputer serta Fungsinya

Motherboard
Motherboard adalah komponen komputer tempat kita menancapkan atau memasangkan komponen-komponen komputer lainnya seperti processor, video card, sound card, hard disk, dan lain sebagainya. Motherboard berfungsi untuk menghubungkan setiap komponen-komponen komputer tersebut agar bisa saling berkomunikasi satu sama lain. Setiap motherboard memiliki spesifikasi-nya masing-masing, spesifikasi seperti processor apa yang didukungnya dan berapa kapasitas maksimal RAM yang didukung oleh motherboard tersebut.
Processor
Jika sebuah komputer diibaratkan sebagai seorang manusia, maka processor adalah otak manusia tersebut. Processor atau CPU (Central Processing Unit) adalah sebuah komponen komputer yang bertugas untuk mengeksekusi instruksi atau melakukan perhitungan-perhitungan. Sebelum membeli sebuah processor kalian harus mencari tahu terlebih dahulu socket processor apa yang dimiliki oleh motherboard kalian, apakah socket AM2, socket LGA 775, atau lain sebagainya.
RAM
RAM adalah singkatan dari Random Access Memory, yaitu sebuah komponen komputer yang berfungsi untuk menyimpan data sementara dari suatu program yang sedang kita jalankan dan data-data tersebut bisa diakses secara acak atau random. Sebelum membeli sebuah RAM kalian harus mencari tahu terlebih dahulu slot RAM apa yang dimiliki oleh motherboard kalian, apakah SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, atau lain sebagainya.
Video Card
Video card ini adalah komponen komputer yang berfungsi untuk menghasilkan output gambar untuk ditampilkan di monitor. Sebelum membeli sebuah video card, kalian harus mencari tahu terlebih dahulu slot video card apa yang dimiliki oleh motherboard kalian, apakah slot PCI, AGP, PCI-X, PCI Express, atau lain sebagainya.
Sound Card
Sound card adalah sebuah komponen komputer yang berfungsi untuk menghasilkan suara dan menyediakan port-port inputan dan outputan. Sound card biasanya telah disediakan secara onboard di motherboard-motherboard baru yang ada di pasaran saat ini, jadi kalian tidak perlu mengeluarkan dana ekstra untuk membeli sebuah sound card.
Hard Disk
Hard disk adalah komponen komputer tempat kita menyimpan data. Semakin besar kapasitas hard disk yang kita miliki di komputer kita maka semakin banyak juga data yang bisa kita simpan di komputer kita tersebut. Sebelum membeli hard disk kalian harus mencari tahu terlebih dahulu interface hard disk apa yang dimiliki oleh motherboard kalian, apakah IDE, SCSI, SATA, atau lain sebagainya.
Optical Disc Drive
Walaupun tanpa sebuah optical disc drive komputer kita bisa nyala atau berfungsi, tetapi rasanya tanpa komponen komputer yang satu ini komputer kita seperti terisolasi dari dunia luar, terisolasi dari dunia luar maksudnya kita akan kesulitan jika suatu saat ingin meng-copy data, meng-install program, menonton film VCD atau DVD, yang semuanya tersimpan di dalam sebuah keping CD atau DVD. Optical Disc Drive ini bisa berupa CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, Blue-Ray, atau lain sebagainya. Sebelum membeli sebuah optical disk drive kalian harus mencari tahu dulu interface apa yang dimiliki oleh motherboard kalian, apakah IDE, SATA, atau lain sebagainya.
Monitor
Monitor adalah komponen komputer yang berfungsi untuk menampilkan gambar yang di-output dari video card. Monitor komputer yang banyak tersedia di pasaran saat ini adalah monitor CRT (monitor tabung) dan monitor LCD, namun saat ini kebanyakan orang-orang lebih memilih menggunakan monitor LCD (terutama di kantor-kantor) karena monitor LCD ini selain tampilannya lebih modern, juga memiliki kelebihan lainnya yaitu hemat space dan hemat listrik.
Keyboard
Keyboard adalah sebuah komponen komputer inputan yang berfungsi sebagai alat untuk mengetikkan sesuatu. Selain keyboard standard, keyboard komputer saat ini memiliki model bermacam-macam, seperti keyboard mini, keyboard fleksibel yang bisa dilipat, keyboard wireless yang menggunakan bluetooth, dan lain sebagainya.
Mouse
Mouse adalah komponen komputer inputan yang berfungsi untuk menggerakan cursor di layar monitor kita dan untuk meng-klik sesuatu seperti tombol-tombol di sebuah program aplikasi. Mouse juga bermacam-macam modelnya, ada mouse standard, mouse untuk keperluan gaming, mouse wireless yang menggunakan bluetooth, dan lain sebagainya.
Power Supply
Ibarat sebuah mobil yang tidak bisa berjalan jika tidak memiliki bahan bakar, maka sebuah komputer pun tidak akan bisa nyala atau berfungsi jika tidak memiliki power supply atau PSU (Power Supply Unit) ini. Power supply adalah sebuah komponen komputer yang berfungsi untuk mensuplai arus listrik ke komponen-komponen komputer lainnya seperti motherboard, hard disk, optical disk drive, dan lain sebagainya.
Casing
Casing komputer adalah sebuah komponen komputer yang berfungsi sebagai tempat kita meletakkan atau menempelkan motherboard, power supply, optical disc drive, hard disk, dan lain sebagainya. Casing komputer ini dibedakan berdasarkan ukurannya yang sering disebut juga sebagai form factor (seperti ATX dan Micro ATX) dimana form factor ini mengacu kepada form factor motherboard yang didukungnya.
